CHAPTER 20

A man in his mid-fifties opened the door to the doctor’s room with a bang. He was wearing a t-shirt and a pair of khaki trousers. The receptionist followed him into the room. As soon as he saw Ajay sitting in the chair in front of his desk, he abruptly turned to his receptionist and said,

“Lock the front door, and wait for me outside this room.”

She did not question him and left immediately. Dr Dhope closed the door as she left.

Ajay was uncomfortably pressing the blood swathed dupatta against his wound.

“What the hell happened Ajay? Let me see the wound”, yelled Dr Dhope.

Ajay slowly pulled the cotton dupatta away to reveal his punctured stomach.

“Oh my God! Oh my God”, gasped Dr Dhope, “It looks like you were stabbed, Ajay. What the hell!”

He violently started to search for something on the shelves on the wall. He retrieved a pair of clean latex gloves, a stethoscope and a flashlight from the shelves. He hurried towards Ajay who just sat there breathing heavily, holding his wound tightly in his hands constantly staring at it. The area around the wound had turned completely white, and the broad patch where the dupatta was tied was all purple. The dupatta was tied too tightly and had slowed the blood circulation in that area.

Dr Dhope checked Ajay's pupils with the flashlight. They were responding to it very poorly.

“Ajay, Bhavna told me it has been 48 hours. There is no way in hell you can survive that without treatment. What really happened?”

“I feel dizzy.”

"Of course, you feel dizzy, you moron, you have lost a lot of blood. You need blood, and the wound needs to be sewn up, and I cannot do this procedure here. We need to get you to a bigger hospital", said Dr Dhope.

Ajay stretched his hand out to stop Dr Dhope, “You must do it here Vinay. No one can know. We have no other choice, I will tell you everything, but trust me for now.”

Dr Dhope bit his lower lip and shook his head side to side, “No-no-no, I can still manage with my surgical tools, but where will I get the blood at this hour without letting anyone know?”

“Don’t get the blood then; just do the procedure and sew this up.”

"Your pupils have stopped responding, you are feeling dizzy, you can go into shock any moment now, and I am certain you will not survive this even till morning."

“I killed a man Vinay.”

Dr Dhope looked intensely at Ajay’s face. His eyes were not blinking. He was looking at him yet not directly at him.

Dr Dhope gulped his saliva and took his prescription pad and quickly scribbled something onto it with a pencil. He marched outside the room murmuring to himself. He found Bhavna waiting at the door.

"Go upstairs and tell my son to give you all this from the fridge. If my son or my wife asks, tell them it is a minor procedure for an emergency patient, and I will be upstairs in 40 minutes.
